Nov 10 meeting minutes

A huge thanks to everyone that made it to yesterday's meeting. It was very productive and a lot was discussed! Here are the minutes in case anyone missed it.

Looking at the minutes, you'll notice that the Nov 27 event took up a lot of time. Understandably so, because the event takes place in barely 2 weeks. It's going to be very exciting and educative with music, food, and a fashion show. Saaay whaat? Also, did I hear someone say food, you mean free food? Yep, free food from various parts of the world so get there early. Deets: Tuesday, Nov 27, 1130, Vertigo! Be on the lookout for advertisements after reading break.

Enjoy "reading break" everyone!

Time flies! I can't believe it's been two weeks since our last meeting. In a month's time, we'll also be writing finals and almost done with the Fall Semester. Wow!!

Before we head off for reading break, please make it to Friday's meeting at 4:30 in SOCC (SUB B020). Here's the agenda:
-Ratifying amendments to the ACSA constitution
-Event Planning for the De-Stress Fest event
-ACSA social happening at the end of November (collabo with African Eloquence Club)

I really hope you can make it! Speaking of De-stress Fest, look out for a post with more details about this wonderful event hosted by the UVic Student Ambassadors once a semester.

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Watch the way I do my azonto!!

Happy hump-day. Does anyone still say hump day? Anyways I just did. The azonto craze isn't over yet in case you thought it was. In celebration of hump day and the fact that it's almost the weekend, here are three hilarious videos of the dance competition featuring Fuse ODG's "Antenna" single. I'm such a sucker for Youtube vids where ordinary people dance in public. Did that statement make any sense?

October 26 meeting minutes

Here's a link to the Google document here

Present: Tiffany, Boma, David, Segun, Jahanzeb, Ruth, Amarachi, Jemima, Onyechi

The meeting was called to order at 4:20.

Boma proceeded to acknowledge the indigenous territory.

-ACSA blog:
Francis will be asked if he is interested in posting on the ACSA blog. Tiffany volunteered to start posting pictures.

-De-stress fest:
David explained De-Stress Fest. It happens in the last week of November, and  is now in its 3rd semester. Boma shared that she applied for the Community Fund Grant to fund the event. Boma added that a possible theme for the event would revolve around Ubuntu and global citizenship and she planned on asking Moussa Magassa (UVic Human Rights advisor) to make a presentation on the topic, while Taiko Drummers as well as Greg & Uche will perform. The event will take place around lunch time (11-2) in Vertigo on the 27th of November. David suggested that Moussa's presentation not last too long, probably somewhere around 15 minutes. Boma said she was ordering Mexican, African, Caribbean food as well as hot chocolate and marshmallows (suggested by Jahanzeb & Tiffany). Jahanzeb suggested ordering Indian food from the East Indian Market.

Tiffany suggested collaborating with International Commons. Other suggestions included the International Student Association; Students of Color Collective, African Eloquence Club and Human Rights Education Volunteers. These organizations would be invited to table at the event. The UVic ESL center will also be emailed to invite their students to perform at the event.

ACSA Pub crawl
David suggested a pub crawl but in lieu of underage members, maybe a potluck would suffice instead. Jahanzeb suggested contacting UVic Res (Family housing kitchen), Cedar Hill Rec Center or the Saanich Community Center for the use of their kitchen.

Role & Responsibilities
Boma, Segun and Tiffany will go over the document Boma sent to them at a later date.

ACSA Finance Report
Segun will present this at the next meeting.

Why we created this blog

You may be wondering why we created this blog despite the fact that we have a website. The answer to this question is short: we can`t edit our website. It was created by previous ACSA members and we have no means of editing it and uploading new content, so we thought a blog would be the best way to do this. Blogger is also pretty straight forward and this ensures that future ACSA execs are able to continue to use this blog to post information as they see fit. Our blog is still undergoing design changes but it is currently serving its purpose, which is the most important thing.

Look forward to more content in the next few days!

Have a great week.

Flashback: Meeting Ladysmith Black Mambazo last semester

A few members of ACSA had the opportunity to attend the Ladysmith Black Mambazo concert that took place in the UVic Farquhar Auditorium on March 7. It was such a wonderful concert and we got the chance to take a picture with them after the concert. The guys were incredibly nice and they even did a little song for my friends and I.

Definitely one of the highlights of my journey in UVic thus far.
